The DeepRec Roundtable: Insights on AI

On April 9th, Deep Tech leaders from around the world gathered to discuss the most pressing trends, challenges, and opportunities in Artificial Intelligence. From ethical design to machine managers, we explored tomorrow’s tech with the help of our industry experts.

We kickstarted the day with an opening talk from Iwan, the CTO of, who framed the discussion around ethics, explainability, and the expansive future of AI. 

His insights underscored the current ‘gold rush’ in AI, highlighting a push towards developing advanced AI solutions without focussing on the right tools and frameworks to support responsible (and sustainable) development.

The roundtable was structured around four key topics, each aimed at unravelling the complexities of integrating AI into different facets of modern life – Ethical Implications and AI Integration, AI’s Role in Future Management, Explainability, and Hallucinations. Check out some of the top insights from the discussion below.

Ethical Implications and AI Integration 

The conversation on ethics in AI is as old as the technology itself. Our roundtable voiced concerns over the balancing act between innovation and responsibility, highlighting the transparency of algorithms, the risk of perpetuating bias in training data and the impact of AI-led decisions on human lives, particularly in high-impact sectors like defence and healthcare.

Different industries face unique challenges when implementing AI. For example, in healthcare, AI tools must meet stringent accuracy and reliability standards due to their direct impact on patient outcomes.

In contrast, AI in entertainment has more leeway, focusing instead on enhancing user engagement and personalisation. Despite these differences, it’s clear that a common baseline for AI ethics across industries is needed, one that involves a unified approach to developing and deploying AI systems. 

This includes stringent oversight on how these technologies are implemented, ensuring they enhance outcomes rather than hinder them. 

Data ownership remains a hot-button issue, with AI’s extensive data requirements posing growing privacy concerns. The roundtable highlighted the need for robust frameworks that protect individual data rights while making room for innovation.

Errors were recognised as inevitable aspects of AI development, but that doesn’t mitigate the need for improved training datasets, regular audits, and transparent working practices. We also explored the idea of AI systems being able to learn from and correct their mistakes, with an emphasis on creating mechanisms that allow for continual learning and improvement.

AI's Role in Future Management 

Leadership is evolving, and the role of the manager is taking on a new form in today’s AI-enabled world. As the rate of adoption increases, AI has begun to enhance managerial efficiency, automating routine tasks and providing detailed insights into team performance, market conditions, and operational inefficiencies. As AI starts to take care of the data-heavy analytical work, the value of soft skills and interpersonal relationship management is skyrocketing.

To accommodate the myriad changes brought about by AI integration, substantial infrastructural upgrades are a must. These include the development of robust AI systems capable of handling complex, multimodal tasks, and the implementation of secure and scalable networks that support data flows and decision-making processes. Upskilling managers to help the workforce adapt to the new normal should be a priority in any talent management strategy.

We also discussed ‘low hanging fruit’ — tasks and processes that are easiest to automate and yield immediate benefits when managed by AI. These could include data analysis, schedule optimization, and basic decision-making processes.

That said, thanks to developments in areas like GenAI, we’re witnessing a paradigm shift in even the most creative professions. AI can augment human capabilities, leading to unprecedented efficiency and innovation, and still, a major barrier to widespread implementation is a lack of access to skilled candidates.

Necessity of Explainability in AI Systems 

Explainability is crucial for fostering that all-important sense of trust in tech. One of the more significant challenges in AI explainability is the inherent complexity of some machine learning models, especially deep learning networks that function as ‘black boxes.’

These models often lack transparency by nature, making it difficult for even their developers to trace how specific decisions were reached. Our experts spotlighted the tension between creating highly accurate AI systems and developing models that stakeholders can easily understand and audit. 

Looking forward, regulatory frameworks that mandate the explainability of AI systems will need to evolve alongside the tech. In recent years, however, regulators have struggled to keep up. For many, the introduction of the EU’s AI Act is a positive step forward, but some detractors claim it could stifle innovation.

The development of hybrid models (that incorporate both interpretable machine learning algorithms and more complex systems) aims to strike a balance between performance and transparency, but more effort is needed to make AI processes and decisions more accessible to end-users.

This emphasis on explainability is a direct response to the call for AI that not only performs tasks efficiently but also aligns with the broader societal expectations for fairness, accountability, and transparency in an era of ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance).

Challenges with LLM Hallucinations 

One of the most significant challenges with LLM hallucinations is maintaining the accuracy and reliability of the model's outputs, particularly in sensitive fields such as healthcare, finance, or legal services.

In these areas, false information can have serious, sometimes life-altering consequences. Our roundtable discussed strategies for mitigating these risks, including rigorous testing and validation protocols to ensure that LLMs maintain high standards of accuracy. 

Unlike deterministic systems, LLMs do not always have a straightforward 'correct or incorrect' output, making it difficult to establish ground truth checks for every response. Automated error detection systems and human oversight can ensure errors are identified and addressed promptly. 

Frequent hallucinations can severely damage users' trust in AI systems – when users can’t rely on their tools to provide accurate information, their willingness to use the technology diminishes.

Hallucinations can also reflect or amplify biases present in the training data. This issue is particularly problematic as it can lead to stereotyping or misrepresenting individuals and groups, with one infamous example being facial recognition software that disproportionately misidentifies people of colour.

Accurate, diverse, and representative datasets are key to mitigating AI bias, but it’s important to look at who’s building the tools in the first place. A homogenised team lacks the diversity of thought needed to cater tech solutions to a diverse humanity, and yet, the Deep Tech space still suffers from a lack of diverse workforce representation.
