AI Enablement: Three Emerging Talent Trends

Of all the headline-stealing tech trends in the last few years, few have managed to capture the imagination quite like AI’s impact on the modern workplace.

Is the AI-enablement narrative too much of a muchness? Or is 2024 the year that the hype meets reality? Whatever the case, meaningful progress will depend on the ability to navigate the ebb and flow of the talent landscape.

Here are some of the emerging trends we’re seeing in the recruitment space, and what they mean for the future of AI.

A Range of Industries Compete for the Same Talent Pool

A broad uptake in machine learning techniques/systems has led to some fierce competition for talent, and the supply of candidates is struggling to keep up. Demand is growing across a wide spectrum of industries as a result, and, in many cases, hiring managers from seemingly disparate industries are forced to compete inside the same shrinking pool.

Adjusting the search parameters to look beyond hyper-specialised candidates is vital to overcoming the short talent supply. A shortage of skilled AI-savvy tech workers is still one of the main culprits for the slow rate of enterprise adoption.

Soft Skills Gain New Value

Understanding the human impact on AI systems is crucial. Engineers with dependable soft skills can design AI solutions that address dynamic real-world needs – a prime example being in the fraud detection space.

Managing stakeholder expectations has emerged as a key skill in the DeepTech space, and hiring managers are refocusing their attention towards candidates with fundamental soft skills (such as adaptability, leadership, communication, teamwork, and conflict resolution).

Diversity and Inclusion Take Centre Stage

The AI workforce has a woeful representation problem. The dangerous effects of AI monoculture are well-known, and yet little progress has been made in terms of diversifying the workforce.

In light of widespread regulatory pressures and shifting consumer expectations, diversity and inclusion are firmly in the spotlight for 2024.

Given the limited candidate pool and systemic barriers to industry access, employers have historically struggled to create equitable hiring processes. Adopting alternative recruitment methodologies is crucial if leaders hope to improve representation.
